Gentlemen:
It is my educated guess that the Mustang in question is the P-51D 44-84390 N2869D. I believe the key to its identity rests in the aircraft's prop from a Douglas Skyraider.

Not very often (if ever) can I say to both John Kerr and John Dienst, "No Joy". Small hint: This P-51 is a current survivor.

How about 44-84952 when owned by Joe Hartney. No gun ports,no cuffed prop, and he had to paint it white first before he put the stripes on.

Bill, I think you nailed it. That would make in N210D

Incorrect. I was not expecting this one to last so long. This P-51 was sold surplus at McClellan AFB 1957 for less than $900 and has been through several private owners since.

Okay,so I wasted a whole snow day on the last guess. How about
45-11553? An early 70's picture also shows polished exhaust shrouds, blocked off cowl vents, and a forward facing antenna on the top of the vertical fin,and was $879.79 at the McClellan auction.

Of course I know this Mustang. I rode in it back around 1970 when it was N22DC. It was based at Torrance, CA. If only I had checked this site earlier I could have been the hero who solved it.

Just a note that Dick Weaver's Mustang, N713DW, had a Bearcat propeller when he raced it at Reno in 1966-67.
